The heavy bombers that executed this theory — the B-17, the B-24, the B-29 — flew in formations of hundreds of aircraft at altitudes above 25,000 feet, absorbing fighter attacks and anti-aircraft fire over targets in Germany, Japan, and across the Pacific and European theaters. The crews who flew them had some of the highest casualty rates of any military occupational specialty in the war.
