Commissioned on September 10, 1945, just eight days after Japan's formal surrender, she arrived in the Pacific too late to fight in the war she was built for, and spent the next five decades compensating for it: deployments during the Korean War, Vietnam, the Cold War patrols of the Western Pacific, and finally Operation Desert Storm in 1991, when she launched the first strikes of the air campaign before being decommissioned in 1992. She is now the USS Midway Museum in San Diego — the most visited naval museum in the United States and home to 29 restored aircraft on her flight deck.
