Short answer
Aloha attire is Hawaii's version of dressy casual. For men, that's an aloha shirt with slacks, chinos or nice shorts. For women, it's a muumuu, sundress or island-print dress. Sandals are normal. If the invitation says "aloha formal," dress it up: long pants, a refined print, and a longer dress.
Somebody gets a wedding invitation with two words at the bottom, "aloha attire," and suddenly they're googling it at midnight. We get it. On the mainland those words don't mean much. Here they mean something pretty specific, and it's easier than you think.
What does aloha attire mean on an invitation?
It means wear island clothes, and wear them like you mean it. An aloha shirt is the backbone for men. Women have more range: a muumuu, a sarong or wrap dress, a sundress in a Hawaiian print. Nobody expects a suit or a cocktail dress, and a tie would look out of place at most events.
Think of it as the same effort you'd put into a nice dinner out, translated into prints and natural fabrics.
| Occasion | Men | Women | Kids |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luau | Aloha shirt, untucked, with shorts or chinos. Slippers are fine. | Muumuu or sundress, flat sandals | Cabana set or sundress |
| Hawaiian wedding | Aloha shirt with slacks, leather sandals or loafers | Muumuu or midi dress, dressy sandals or wedges | Matching 2-piece set or dress |
| Aloha formal | Long sleeve aloha shirt in a quieter print, dress slacks | Long muumuu or elegant print dress | Wedding white or dressy set |
| Aloha Friday at work | Aloha shirt with slacks | Aloha print dress or blouse |
What should a man wear to a luau?
An aloha shirt, worn untucked, with shorts or chinos. That's it. Aloha shirts are cut with a straight hem so they hang right outside your pants, which is how most people here wear them. Slippers (flip-flops) are completely normal at a luau. Save the dress shoes for another trip.
One tip from the shop: pick cotton or rayon over polyester. A luau is usually outdoors in the evening, it's still warm, and natural fabric breathes.

Guests: an aloha shirt and slacks for men, a muumuu or flowy print dress for women. Leather sandals or loafers look right. So do dressy sandals or wedges, since heels sink into grass and sand (you'll find out fast at a beach ceremony).
The wedding party is where "wedding white" comes in. Grooms, groomsmen and ring bearers often wear a white-on-white aloha shirt, sometimes with white linen pants. Guests can wear white too, though it's polite to check with the couple first, same as anywhere.

It's Hawaii's semi-formal. Men wear a long sleeve aloha shirt or a short sleeve one in a subtle print, with dress slacks and real shoes or leather sandals. Women wear a floor-length muumuu or an elegant print dress. The goal is still island style, just with the volume turned down. Skip anything with cartoon prints or loud novelty themes.
What is Aloha Friday?
Aloha Friday is Hawaii's original casual Friday, when people wear aloha shirts and island dresses to work. It started as a campaign by the Hawaiian Fashion Guild. In 1962 the guild's "Operation Liberation" gave aloha shirts to state legislators, and Aloha Friday officially began in 1966, according to the history on Wikipedia's aloha shirt article and Reyn Spooner. Sixty years later, plenty of Hawaii offices still treat an aloha shirt as business wear any day of the week.
Should you tuck in a Hawaiian shirt?
Usually no. The straight hem is designed to be worn out. Tucking reads more formal, which works for aloha formal events with dress slacks, or for a long sleeve shirt. For a luau, a beach wedding or a regular Friday, leave it out.
What is palaka?
Palaka is a sturdy plaid cotton, usually blue and white, that arrived in Hawaii aboard merchant ships in the mid-1800s. Plantation workers and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) made it their work shirt, and it became a local classic. A palaka shirt counts as aloha attire, and it's a good pick if you want something unmistakably Hawaiian that isn't floral.

What do Hawaiian women wear to a luau?
Most wear a muumuu or a sundress in an island print, with flat sandals. A flower behind the ear is common.
Is aloha crisp or aloha casual the same as aloha attire?
Close. "Aloha casual" leans relaxed: shorts and slippers are fine. "Aloha crisp" and "aloha formal" lean dressier: pressed aloha shirt, slacks, a longer dress. When in doubt, go one step dressier.
Can I wear a Hawaiian shirt to a wedding in Hawaii?
Yes, if the invitation says aloha attire, it's expected. Pair it with slacks rather than shorts, and pick a print that isn't too loud.
What should I pack for Hawaii?
Two or three aloha shirts or dresses cover most dinners and events. Our local's packing guide goes item by item.
