Short answer
Yes, a Hawaiian shirt can shrink, and heat is almost always the reason. Cotton shrinks if it meets hot water or a hot dryer. Rayon shrinks faster, gets weak while it's wet, and loses its sheen in hot water. Wash in cold water, keep rayon out of the dryer completely, and line dry in the shade. Do that and the shirt keeps its size for years.
"Will this shrink?" is one of the two questions we hear most at our shop on Maui. (The other one is "Is this really made in Hawaii?" and it deserves its own answer.) People usually ask it while holding a rayon shirt, and usually because a dryer already ruined one for them. Fair enough. Here's the same advice we give across the counter.
Does rayon shrink more than cotton?
Yes. Rayon is regenerated cellulose, usually made from wood pulp, and its fibers swell and lose strength when they're wet. Tumble it in warm water and it tightens up. Wring it out and it can twist out of shape. That's why rayon drapes so beautifully and also why it needs a gentler hand.
Cotton is tougher. We call it the forgiving one. It relaxes and softens the more you wear it, but give it heat and it'll still shrink.
| 100% cotton | 100% rayon | |
|---|---|---|
| Wash | Machine, gentle cycle, cold water | Dry clean preferred, or hand wash cold |
| Dry | Line dry, or cool tumble and pull it out slightly damp | Line dry only, in the shade, on a padded hanger |
| Iron | Cool to warm, inside out | Cool or steam, inside out, while slightly damp |
| Watch out for | Shrinks if it gets warm | Weak when wet, so never wring or twist it |
How do you wash a rayon Hawaiian shirt?
Dry cleaning is the safest route. If you'd rather do it at home, hand wash it cold:
- Turn it inside out. This protects the printed face of the fabric.
- Use cold water and a mild soap. Plain Ivory works well. Don't let it soak.
- Press the water out gently. No wringing, no twisting. Wet rayon stretches and distorts easily.
- Reshape it while it's damp and hang it on a padded hanger in the shade, before wrinkles set.
- Touch it up with steam or a cool iron, inside out, while it's still a little damp.
The first time you wash any new shirt, wash it by itself. Bold prints can release a little dye early on.

Machine washing is fine. Turn it inside out, run the gentle cycle in cold water with a short spin, and use a mild soap. Then reshape it and hang it up while it's damp. That's the whole routine.
Cotton is what we'd hand someone who doesn't want to think about laundry.
Should a Hawaiian shirt go in the dryer?
Line drying is best, and it isn't close. Hang shirts in the shade, because direct sun fades a print faster than you'd expect (anyone who's left a towel on a Maui lanai knows this). If a cotton shirt has to go in the dryer, use the coolest setting and pull it out while it's still slightly damp. Rayon skips the dryer entirely. No exceptions.
One warning we give everyone: never use Woolite on a white shirt with a red print. It can lift the red dye into the white areas, and it won't come back out. Wedding white shirts with red hibiscus are the usual victims. And never bleach rayon or cotton, full stop.
How do you iron a Hawaiian shirt without ruining the print?
Keep the iron cool, or use steam. Press from the inside, or lay a cloth between the iron and the fabric. Rayon irons best while it's slightly damp. A handheld steamer takes the risk off the table completely, which is why we'd pick one over an iron for any shirt you care about.
How should you store aloha shirts?
Hang them, especially rayon, since folds can set into creases. Make sure a shirt is fully dry before it goes in the closet, keep it out of direct light, and toss the plastic dry-cleaning bag. The fabric needs air.

From $54.99See the shirtShould I size up in case it shrinks?
No. If you wash cold and keep it away from heat, buy the size that fits you now. The better move is to measure a shirt you already like across the chest, seam to seam, and compare it with the size chart on the product page. Our RJC men's rayon shirts list chest, shoulder and length for every size.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Hawaiian shirt have to be dry cleaned?
Cotton never needs it. Rayon doesn't have to be dry cleaned either, but it's the preferred option. Hand washing in cold water with a mild soap and line drying in the shade works well if you're careful not to wring it.
Why did my rayon shirt lose its shine?
Hot water. Rayon loses its luster when it's washed warm, on top of shrinking. Cold water keeps both the size and the sheen.
Does 100% cotton shrink after washing?
Only if it gets warm. Cold water and a line dry keep a cotton aloha shirt the same size. A hot dryer is the usual culprit.

Treat it like the most delicate rayon you own: dry clean it or hand wash it cold, never wring it, and line dry it on a padded hanger out of the sun. If you're not sure what you have, our guide to identifying a vintage Hawaiian shirt walks through labels, buttons and fabric.
