Short answer
A Hawaiian dress is any dress cut from an island print, usually in rayon or cotton. The traditional styles are the loose muumuu and the fitted holokū. Today's most-worn cuts are the empire waist, bias cut, smocked sundress and wrap-style sarong dress. Pick the cut for your shape and occasion, then check the label says made in Hawaii.
About 18,100 people a month search "Hawaiian dress" in the US, according to Google's Keyword Planner. Most of them land on a grid of floral dresses with no explanation of why one would suit them better than another. We sell these dresses at our shop on Maui, and the question we hear most isn't about prints at all. It's "Is this actually made in Hawaii?" We'll get to that.
First, the part the product grids skip: which cut suits you.

What are the different types of Hawaiian dresses?
There are two traditional Hawaiian dresses and a handful of modern cuts. The traditional pair came first, in the 1820s. The holokū is a fitted gown with a yoke and a train, first sewn for the high chiefess Kalākua in 1820. The muumuu (muʻumuʻu) began as the loose shift worn underneath it. There's also the holomuʻu, which Lei Day Hawaiʻi describes as a holokū with the train taken off. Our muumuu guide tells that story in full.
The modern cuts are what most people actually wear now. Here's how they compare:
| Style | How it fits | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muumuu | Loose, no waist seam | Varies by style | Everyday comfort, luau, travel |
| Empire tie-front | Seam under the bust, drawstring tie | Knee | Aloha Friday, dinners, most body types |
| Bias cut | Fitted, skims the curves, zip back | Knee | Date night, parties, photos |
| Smocked tube sundress | Stretchy smocked top, strapless | Varies by style | Beach, luau, hot afternoons |
| Mock wrap sarong | Wrap look, one piece | Above the knee | Vacation, dinners, easy packing |
| Flared short tank | Fitted top, flared skirt | Short | Casual days, matching your partner |
| Handkerchief hem | Relaxed, pointed hem that moves | Midi | Evening luau, garden parties |
| Tea-length cap sleeve | V-neck pullover, cap sleeves | Tea length | Weddings, aloha formal |
Which Hawaiian dress is most flattering for my shape?
Honestly, the cut matters more than the print. Two women can love the same hibiscus pattern and need completely different dresses. Here's how the cuts work, based on how they're built:
- Fuller bust or hips: the empire tie-front in the Generous Fit. It's cut with more room through the bust, waist and hips, and the drawstring lets you set the drape yourself. It runs up to 3X Plus.
- Pear shape: the bias cut. The fabric is cut diagonally across the grain, so it falls close to the body and skims the hips instead of clinging to them. RJC describes it as especially flattering for pear-shaped figures.
- Want to hide the tummy: the mock wrap sarong dress. The crossover front is cut to conceal the midsection, and you never have to re-tie anything.
- Don't want to think about it: the muumuu. It hangs from the shoulders, so there's no waistline to land in the wrong place. That's the whole appeal.
If you like a dress close to the body, the bias cut and the A-line with a slimming bodice are your best bets. If you like air moving around you (and in August on Maui, you will), go empire, muumuu or smocked.

Match the length to the occasion and you can't really go wrong.
| Occasion | Dress | Shoes |
|---|---|---|
| Luau | Smocked sundress, flared short tank or muumuu | Flat sandals |
| Beach wedding guest | Tea-length cap sleeve or handkerchief hem midi | Dressy flat sandals or wedges |
| Aloha formal | Long muumuu or an evening dress in a soft print | Dressy sandals |
| Dinner on vacation | Mock wrap sarong or empire tie-front | Sandals or wedges |
| Aloha Friday at work | Empire tie-front or A-line | Flats |
One tip for weddings: soft, muted prints read dressier than loud ones. A pale hibiscus and orchid print in tea length looks like it belongs at a ceremony. The same dress in a big parrot print looks like it belongs at the after-party. If the invitation says "aloha attire" and you want the full rundown, our aloha attire guide covers it.

From $81.99See the dressIs rayon or cotton better for a Hawaiian dress?
Rayon for drape, cotton for easy care. Rayon is lighter than cotton, breathes well in humid heat, and moves beautifully, which is why most of our dressier cuts (bias, empire, cap sleeve) come in rayon. Cotton holds its shape, goes in the washing machine on a cold gentle cycle, and forgives a lot. Both shrink with heat, so wash cold either way. Our rayon and cotton care guide has the full routine.

$58.99See the dressHow do Hawaiian dresses fit?
Three rules for getting the fit right:
- Check for "Generous Fit" or "Regular Fit." Our RJC empire dresses come in both. Generous has more room through the bust, waist and hips, and runs to 3X Plus.
- Read the fit note on the page. Some styles, like the mock wrap sarong and the ruffle tank dress, run small for some people, and the product page says so. When it does, size up.
- Compare garment measurements, not the size label. Our bias cut dress, for example, lists bust, waist and hip for every size. Lay a dress you already love flat, measure it, and compare.
Plus sizes aren't an afterthought here. The Generous Fit empire, the tea-length cap sleeve and our muumuus all run to 3X. On the other end, Paradise Found makes its princess seam flared dress in a petite cut.
How can you tell a Hawaiian dress is really made in Hawaii?
"Is it made in Hawaii?" is the question we hear most at our shop, and it's the right one to ask. Plenty of dresses sold as Hawaiian are printed and sewn overseas.
Look at the label and the listing. A real one says Made in Hawaii (or Made in Hawaii, USA) and names a maker. Most of our dresses are made in Hawaii by RJC, which has made aloha wear since 1953, and by Paradise Found. Every one of our product pages says where it was made in its first line, and if a listing anywhere won't tell you, treat that as your answer.

$77.99See the dressHow much does a good Hawaiian dress cost?
At our shop, most made-in-Hawaii dresses in rayon or cotton cost between $45 and $85. By style: smocked and tube sundresses from $39, mock wrap sarong dresses from $47.99, bias cut dresses from $55.99, empire tie-front dresses from $63.99, muumuus from $67.99, and the tea-length cap sleeve from $81.99. A few clearance A-line styles start at $32.
Much cheaper often means polyester and an overseas factory. That's fine for a costume party. For something you'll wear to a wedding and then again next year, the fabric is worth it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Hawaiian dress called?
The traditional Hawaiian dresses are the muumuu, a loose dress with no waist seam, and the holokū, a fitted gown with a train. A holokū without the train is sometimes called a holomuʻu. Modern Hawaiian dresses are named by cut: empire, bias cut, sarong or wrap, smocked sundress.
Can I wear a Hawaiian dress to a wedding?
Yes, especially in Hawaii, where it's often expected. Choose a tea-length or midi dress in a soft print and pair it with dressy sandals. Save the short, loud prints for the luau.
Do Hawaiian dresses come in plus sizes?
Yes. Our Generous Fit empire dresses, tea-length cap sleeve dresses and muumuus run up to 3X, and the Generous Fit is cut with extra room through the bust and hips.
Do you have petite Hawaiian dresses?
Yes. Paradise Found makes its princess seam flared dress in a petite cut, made in Hawaii, in dozens of prints.
What's the difference between a muumuu and a sundress?
A muumuu hangs loose from the shoulders with no waist. A Hawaiian sundress is lighter and more fitted on top, often strapless with a smocked bodice, and is made for hot afternoons.
Are Hawaiian dresses only for tourists?
No. People in Hawaii wear them to work on Aloha Friday, to weddings and to family parties.
